Bordeaux-Los Angeles, sisters turning 50

JPEGBordeaux and Los Angeles are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Los Angeles-Bordeaux Sister Cities program. (The celebrations kicked off January 15th at the Los Angeles Art Show.)

Los Angeles and Bordeaux officially became sister cities in 1964. In the 1960s, the American model of modernity created a strong attraction in France. While the twin city relationship initially took form in education exchanges, Bordeaux and Los Angeles linked for research and cultural exchanges over the years as well.

Today the two cities put an emphasis on the importance of the partnerships between cultural institutions. For example, this year le Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux will lend Eugène Delacroix’s famous painting "La Grèce sur les ruines de Missolonghi" to LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art).

The mayor of Bordeaux, Mr. Alain Juppé, invited Los Angeles to be the city guest of honor at the 9th annual “Bordeaux Fête le Vin” (june 26-29th 2014). Held every two years, the Bordeaux Wine Festival is an international event dedicated to Bordeaux and Aquitaine wines. The program included: an open-air "Wine Route" to discover, taste and share, excursions through the Bordeaux vineyards as well as art exhibitions, concerts and fireworks every evening!

The four days of festivities planned marked an important time of this year’s commemoration.
