After taking part of Saturday’s vigil, Santa Monica Mayor Kevin Mckeow addressed a message to the Consul General of France Christophe Lemoine to share with the people of France:

“I am here today as Mayor of Santa Monica, citizen of the United States,
citizen of the Irish Republic, global citizen, and, like all of us around
the world joined in grief today, citizen of France. In two weeks I will
be traveling to Paris myself to represent Santa Monica at the COP21 global climate change conference, and I shall carry with me to Paris warm wishes, sincere sympathy, and unyielding solidarity from the people of Santa
Monica.”

Kevin McKeown
Mayor
City of Santa Monica

«I spent many years of my youth in Paris. Paris helped form the woman I am today. Paris is a city of lights, love, liberty, joy, and passion. It is a city where artists can dream and regardless of age, color, religion, creed or gender you are accepted. The senseless attacks in Paris show that Paris represents all the freedoms and liberties that this baseless terrorism is against. As I extend my most heartfelt and sincere condolences to the people of Paris and of France I must also say that I am certain without a shadow of a doubt that this attack will not dampen the spirit of this great city. Paris, without doubt will remain a beacon of light for all those that seek liberty and life.

I want to send my deepest sympathies and condolences to everyone who has been affected by this devastating tragedy in Paris. As a lover of Paris and everything it stands for, I feel greatly saddened and disturbed by the thought of anyone trying to diminish the spirit of Paris and everyone there. Paris has and continues to inspire me everyday, and when I visit in a few weeks, I hope to be able to lend a warm hug and as much love as I can to my dear Parisians. I wish to acknowledge their strength and bravery by sharing this quote from one of the biggest advocates of peace, Nelson Mandela: “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”

Warmest Regards,

B.H

We are very saddened at the terror that lived in Paris last Friday. Every person who has ever visited Paris loves it forever. It is indeed the City of Lights. In Los Angeles next April, at the Directors Guild of America, we will celebrate the 20th Anniversary of COLCOA, City of Lights, City of Angeles Film Festival , created and sponsored by the Franco American Cultural Fund of which DGA is a founding member. We will toast to the spirit and love of cinema— with all its freedoms and ability to show us the human experience—that are so important to both our countries and which terrorism cannot erase.

Condolences to those who died in recent attacks. I will not be canceling my planned vacation to Paris in December. My father fought for France’s liberty, equality and fraternity during World War II. I was there right after Charlie Hebdo’s attack, too. France’s great attraction is her people whose strength is joie de vivre!

Be Strong, Mes Amis!
