The concept of Shoot the Book! was launched during the Cannes Film Festival in 2014, and consists in a pitching session during which rights directors from French publishing houses present books chosen for their potential as screen adaptations for film, television and other digital formats, in front of an audience of film professionals. Since its first installment at the heart of France’s biggest film event, Shoot the Book! has shown with constant success the need to create closer connections between French content and film professionals.

After the first and very successful edition of Shoot the Book! LA in 2015, the Société Civile des Éditeurs de Langue Française (SCELF), the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in Los Angeles, and the Institut Français are organizing a second edition in November 2016. The object of this second installment is to follow up on the success of the first edition, and to continue the many discussions and negotiations initiated in 2015: less than 6 months after the event, 8 sales are under discussion, and 3 contracts are being negotiated out of the 20 titles presented.

This year’s Cannes Film Festival is the most fitting occasion to announce the selection, established by an outstanding jury of American film professionals, of the French publishing houses that will be invited to Shoot the Book! LA 2016. The committee, headed by Howard Rodman (President, Writer’s Guild of America West), is composed of Bob Bookman (Senior motion picture and television agent, Paradigm), Franklin Leonard (film executive, founder of The Black List) and Andrea McCall (Senior Vice-President, DreamWorks Studio).

Presented with a list of 24 titles, the jury members have selected 5 books representing the great diversity of today’s French literary production:

- The Paris Lawyer, by Sylvie Granotier. Albin Michel

- Mary’s Diary, by Alexandra Echkenazi. Belfond

- Jazz Maynard, by Roger & Paul. Dargaud

- The Deep Sea Diver’s Syndrome, by Serge Brussolo. Denoël

- The Great Silence, by Loup Durand. Plon

Representatives from these leading publishing houses will come to Los Angeles to present these titles along with another title of their choice from their catalog. This selection encompasses many genres, from thrillers to graphic novels, sci-fi, historical novels, or noir, and definitely brings out the dynamism and innovation of today’s French literary creation.

The format of the event is composed of a one-hour pitching session during which the publishers will have three minutes to pitch their titles, followed by a Q&A with the event’s moderator, Steven Gaydos, Vice-President and Executive Editor at Variety. The pitching session will be followed by a networking reception. The French publishers will also be conducting individual meetings as well as visiting studios and talent agencies during their stay in Los Angeles.

The second installment of Shoot the Book! in the creative hub that is now Los Angeles promises yet again to showcase the best of French and Francophone literature to the American film industry.
