Long stay visa for Spouses of a French national (FRANCE and French Overseas Departments)

This procedure does NOT apply to French overseas territories.

LONG STAY VISA AND RESIDENCE PERMIT IN FRANCE


- Long stay visa holders will have to register to the French Office of Immigration and Integration (OFII) during the first three months of their stay in France. For further information, please check the residence permit page.

- During the validity of their visa, holders of a long stay (D) visa are authorized to travel within the other Schengen States without a Schengen visa (for a maximum of 90 days within a six month period)

- A long stay visa for spouse of a French citizen is valid 12 months after registration at the OFII. Make sure that the validity of your passport is valid 3 months after the end of the visa.

- YES, except if you are a citizen of one of the following countries:

PROCESSING TIME


- About 7-10 days for United States, Canada, Mexico citizens
- About 3 weeks for other nationalities

You may apply for your visa no earlier than 3 months before your departure date.
Please apply in advance, do not wait the last minute.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

Please provide us with the ORIGINAL + 1 COPY of each document listed including passport and relevant pages.

THE VISA SECTION DOES NOT MAKE ANY COPIES

Applications are processed free of charge for spouses of French citizens, however you will be required to pay the OFII processing fees in France.

Please note that a "PACS" (Pacte civil de solidarité) is NOT considered as a marriage. You will need to apply for a "visitor" visa.

1 — PROOF OF RESIDENCY IN OUR CONSULATE’S JURISDICTION

The French Consulate in Los Angeles only accept applicants who are residents from:
Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Southern California, and Southern Nevada.
You will have to show us at least ONE of the following documents:

  • a valid driver license or state ID from one of these states, which must be located in the consulate’s jurisdiction (click here for a map)
  • or a valid student ID from a university located in one of these states (or a statement issued within the past 2 months from the registrar of your university, which must be located in the consulate’s jurisdiction).
  • or an original lease or rental agreement in the applicant’s name

2 — ORIGINAL PASSPORT

(+ ONE COPY of the identity and relevant pages containing the passport holder’s personal data)

  • Must be valid for at least three months after your return to the US A long stay visa for spouse of a French citizen is valid 12 months after registration at the OFII. Make sure that the validity of your passport is valid 3 months after the end of the 12 months visa.
  • Has at least two blank pages left to affix the visa (amendment pages are NOT suitable for visas).
  • Has been delivered less than 10 years ago (date of the first issuance)
  • Be in good condition (i.e. not torn or damaged)

If you are not a U.S. citizen please include:

  • A valid U.S. permanent residence card ("green card") (+ ONE COPY)
  • or a valid U.S. visa with valid I-94 and valid I-20. (+ ONE COPY of each)
    • Note: B1-B2 U.S. visa holders: Please, apply in the country of your residence. No visas will be delivered to foreigners holding U.S. B1-B2 visas.

      Refugee travel documents and US Re-entry permits are not accepted.
      Diplomatic and special passports are not accepted

4 — PASSPORT PHOTOGRAPH

- One PASSPORT PHOTO. Do not glu or staple. More details on photograph requirements.
- No older than 6 months, in color, plain white background, photo quality paper, passport size (2"x2"), no glasses, your face must fill about 75% of the photograph, taken facing the camera, no side or angled view, no smiling, uncovered (head coverings are not permitted except for religious reasons, but your facial features from bottom of chin to top of forehead and both edges of your face must be clearly shown)

5 — OFII RESIDENCY FORM

6 — PROOF MARIAGE registered by French Civil Registry

- original "LIVRET DE FAMILLE" (+ ONE COPY)

You MUST obtain a "Livret de Famille" from the French authorities BEFORE you apply for a visa. No exceptions will be granted.

If you were married in the United States, you MUST transcribe your marriage at the consulate of jurisdiction depending on the state where the marriage was celebrated.

The Los Angeles consulate transcribes marriages celebrated in Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Guam, Hawaii, Idaho, Louisiana, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Samoa, Texas, Utah, Washington state, and Wyoming (all other states are handled by the Washington DC office)

7 — Your recent "ACTE DE MARIAGE"

- your recent French marriage certificate "acte de mariage":

  • If the marriage took place in France: original of the French marriage certificate "copie intégrale de l’acte de mariage français" no older than 2 months can be requested online(+ ONE COPY)
  • If the marriage took place outside of France: original of the French official transcription "copie intégrale de la transcription sur les registres de l’état civil consulaire français" no older than 6 months can be requested online (+ ONE COPY)

8 — PROOF OF YOUR SPOUSE’S FRENCH NATIONALITY

- Copy of your French spouse’s "carte nationale d’identité" or consular registration card (« carte consulaire »), or "certificat de nationalité française", or the « ampliation du décret de naturalisation ou réintégration ».

9 — PROOF OF RESIDENCY IN FRANCE

- Relevant documents concerning proof of residency of the French spouse or his/her intention to reside in France and Overseas Departments.. (i.e work contract, rental agreement in France and Overseas Departments, "taxe d’habitation", recent gas/electricity bill, signed attestation from parents-in-law + copy of French ID, etc...) (+ ONE COPY)

10 — IN ORDER TO HAVE YOUR PASSPORT MAILED BACK TO YOU:

  • A self-addressed FedEx Express "US Airbill" or an online prepaid FedEx Airbill
  • and FedEx enveloppe

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • The consular administration has full authority to evaluate and request more documents than those submitted by the applicant.
  • Please be aware that submitting the aforementioned documents does not guarantee the approval of the visa.
  • The French Consulate in Los Angeles can refuse the issuance of a visa.

MAKE AN APPOINTMENT

Every applicant must apply in person and must make an appointment on our website. No exceptions. Fingerprints and a photograph must be taken in our premises in Los Angeles.

- If you are not able to attend, please free a slot by canceling or rescheduling your appointment by logging back in the appointment system and click on “changing your appointment”.
You will need your “LAX” confirmation number and passport number.

- One appointment = one person (for instance, family of four must take four appointments)

  • Due to the high number of applicants, the French Consulate reserves the right to cancel appointments made by the same person on the same day (or even on two different dates).
