Long stay visa for scientists, researchers or university teachers holding a "Convention d’Accueil"

Holders of a long stay visa for "scientists" research UNDER 12 months will have to register to the French Office of Immigration and Integration (OFII) during the first three months of their stay in France. For further information, please check the residence permit page.

Holders of a long stay visa for "scientists" research 12 months and OVER, and for spouses of ’scientist’ visa holders: the visa issued will only be valid to allow your entry into the French territory (3 months validity).
You will then need to go to the Prefecture (local administration office) to apply for that residence permit within the first 2 months of arrival. You will not be able to get this permit without first getting the visa in your country of residence.

For minor children of ’scientist’ visa holders:
The length of the visa will be issued according to the length of the ’scientist’ visa holder.

DO I NEED A VISA?

- YES, except if you are a citizen of one of the following countries:

You must obtain your visa while in the USA. The visa cannot be issued once the applicant is in France.

PROCESSING TIME

Processing time about 2 weeks depending on your citizenship. (For United States citizens, processing time is about 10-14 days).

Please, apply in advance. Do not wait for the last minute. You may apply for your visa no earlier than 3 months before your departure date to France.

A mininum of 14 to 16 days is the average processing time if you are a citizen from:

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SCIENTIST OR RESEARCHER

Please provide us with the ORIGINAL + 1 COPY of each document PER APPLICANT including passport and relevant pages. THE VISA SECTION DOES NOT MAKE ANY COPIES. You must bring all the required documents and the photocopies otherwise your visa will be denied

1— PROOF OF RESIDENCY IN OUR CONSULATE’S JURISDICTION

The French Consulate in Los Angeles only accept applicants who are residents from:
Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Southern California, and Southern Nevada.

You will have to show us at least ONE of the following documents:

  • a valid driver license or state ID or temporary state ID from one of these states, which must be located in the consulate’s jurisdiction (click here for a map)
  • or a valid student ID from a university located in one of these states (or a statement issued within the past 2 months from the registrar of your university, which must be located in the consulate’s jurisdiction).
  • or an original lease or rental agreement in the applicant’s name with an address located in the consulate’s jurisdiction, or house deed.

2 — ORIGINAL PASSPORT

- Original passport (+ ONE COPY of the identity pages)

  • Must be valid for at least six months after your return to the US
  • Has least two blank pages left to affix the visa (amendment pages are not suitable for visas).
  • Has been delivered less than 10 years ago (first issuance)
  • Be in good condition.

    Refugee travel documents and US Re-entry permits are not accepted.
    Diplomatic and special passports are not accepted

3 — PROOF OF LEGAL RESIDENCY IN THE UNITED STATES

- If you are not a U.S. citizen: a valid U.S. permanent residence card ("green card") or a valid U.S. visa with valid I-94 or valid I-20, or an Advance Parole document. (+ ONE COPY)

  • B1-B2 visa holders: Please, apply in the country of your residence. No visas will be delivered to foreigners holding U.S B1-B2 visas.

4 — APPLICATION FORM

- One long stay visa APPLICATION FORM filled out completely and signed by the applicant. Please remember to indicate a date of departure from the US to France on question number 26.

5 — APPLICATION FEES

- Processing fee (Visa/Mastercard ONLY, preferably debit card). to be paid in person on the day of your appointment.

6 — PASSPORT PHOTOGRAPH

- One PASSPORT PHOTO. Do not glu or staple. All photographs must be recent, in color on a plain white background, of full front view, taken facing the camera. No side or angled view are acceptable. Passport size. No hat, no veil.

7 — ORIGINAL "CONVENTION D’ACCUEIL"

- Original "CONVENTION D’ACCUEIL" to be obtained from your host institution in France. This document must be stamped by your host in France and stamped by the Préfecture. (+ 2 COPIES)

YOU MUST PROVIDE THE ORIGINAL DOCUMENT. We will NOT accept your application if you only provide photocopies or scans.

8 — DIPLOMA (MASTER OR PHD)

- Original and a photocopy of your diploma (Master or PhD level)

9 — OFII RESIDENCY FORM

- The OFII residence form (in French) duly filled out (upper part only) (+ ONE COPY)

10 — FEDEX RETURN AIRBILL AND ENVELOPE

- In order for us to mail your passport back, you must provide a self-addressed FedEx Express "US Airbill" and FedEx enveloppe for the mailing of your passport in the United States, or a prepaid online FedEx Express Airbill. One envelope per family (maximum 6 passports per envelope)

  • for US Airbill, please fill out your own address twice (you are the sender AND the recipient):

One passport = one set of visa documents (i.e. a family of 4 visa applicants = 4 sets of visa documents)

7 — IF YOU ARE NOT APPLYING FOR YOUR VISA AT THE SAME TIME AS THE HOLDER OF THE SCIENTIST VISA

- Copy of the long stay visa recently issued to the holder of the "scientist" visa OR if visa obtained more than 3 months ago: copy of the French residency permit of the holder of the "scientist" visa

IMPORTANT INFORMATION


- The consular administration has full authority to evaluate and request more documents than those submitted by the applicant.
- Please be aware that submitting the aforementioned documents does not guarantee the approval of the visa.

MAKE AN APPOINTMENT

Every applicant must apply in person and must make an appointment on our website. No exceptions. Fingerprints and a photograph must be taken in our premises in Los Angeles.
  • Children under the age of 6 are not required to be present if applying for a LONG STAY visa, however an appointment has to be booked under their name.
  • Children under the age of 12 are not required to be present if applying for a SCHENGEN visa, however an appointment has to be booked under their name.

- If you are not able to attend, please free a slot by canceling or rescheduling your appointment by logging back in the appointment system and click on “changing your appointment”.

You will need your “LAX” confirmation number and passport number.

- One appointment = one person (for instance, family of four must take four appointments)

  • Due to the high number of applicants, the French Consulate reserves the right to cancel appointments made by the same person on the same day (or even on two different dates).
