LONG STAY VISA AND RESIDENCE PERMIT IN FRANCE


If your visa is approved:
- The length of this visa is valid 3 months, upon arrival you will have to apply for the residence permit ("carte de séjour") within 2 months of entry, at the Préfecture of city of residence.

- Note that it is always advisable to contact the Préfecture BEFORE leaving the U.S., in order to get a complete list of documents to provide to apply for such permit.

WHAT IS A VISITOR VISA?


The "visitor" visa (or visa "D") allows you to enter France and stay for more than three months.
- You need a long stay "visitor" visa if you have sufficient income to stay in France without working (retired, sabbatical year…)

DO I NEED A VISA?


- YES, everyone needs a long stay visa to live in a French territory for more than 3 months, including US citizens. For European Union citizens please contact us by e-mail.

PROCESSING TIME


- Minimum of 6 weeks, up to 2 months.

  • You must be physically in the United States during the entire visa process

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

You must provide the ORIGINAL documents + 1 PHOTOCOPY of each document submitted with the application.

One passport = one set of visa documents (i.e. a family of 4 visa applicants = 4 sets of visa documents)

Please, note you must present a French translation of every document when applying for a long stay visa for New Caledonia, Wallis and Futuna, Mayotte, St Pierre and Miquelon, or French Austral territories.

THE VISA SECTION DOES NOT MAKE ANY COPIES.

1 — PROOF OF RESIDENCY IN OUR CONSULATE’S JURISDICTION

The French Consulate in Los Angeles only accept applicants who are residents from:
Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Southern California, and Southern Nevada.
You will have to show us at least ONE of the following documents:

  • a valid driver license or state ID or a temporary DMV license or ID from a statewhich must be located within the consulate’s jurisdiction (click here for a map)
  • or a valid student ID from a university located in the consulate’s jurisdiction.
  • or an original lease or rental agreement in the applicant’s name

2 — ORIGINAL PASSPORT

- Original passport (+ ONE COPY of the identity pages)

  • Must be valid for at least three months after your return to the US
  • Has least two blank pages left to affix the visa (amendment pages are not suitable for visas).
  • Has been delivered less than 10 years ago (first issuance)
  • Be in good condition.

If you are not a U.S. citizen please include:

  • A valid U.S. permanent residence card ("green card") (+ ONE COPY)
  • or a valid U.S. visa with valid I-94 and valid I-20. (+ ONE COPY of each)
    • Note: B1-B2 U.S. visa holders: Please, apply in the country of your residence. No visas will be delivered to foreigners holding U.S. B1-B2 visas.

      Refugee travel documents and US Re-entry permits are not accepted.
      Diplomatic and special passports are not accepted

5 — PASSPORT PHOTOGRAPHS

- One (1) passport photos. Do not glu or staple.
- no older than 6 months, in color, plain white background, photo quality paper, passport size (2"x2"), must clearly show your features (no glasses), your face must fill about 75-80% of the photograph, taken facing the camera, no side or angled view, keep a neutral expression (no smiling), uncovered (head coverings are not permitted except for religious reasons, but your facial features from bottom of chin to top of forehead and both edges of your face must be clearly shown)

6 — RECENT POLICE CLEARANCE

- A recent police clearance to be obtained from local police station from your place of residence + ONE COPY

7 — SIGNED LETTER PROMISING NOT TO ENGAGE IN ANY PAID OR COMMERCIAL ACTIVITY WHILE IN FRANCE

- Letter promising not to engage in any paid activity in a French overseas Territory, and a brief explanation of your purpose of stay.

8 — PROOF OF FINANCIAL MEANS

- Your last 2 monthly personal bank statements from the USA checking and/or savings only (no investments, no stocks/bonds) showing monthly balance and your name. Please print all pages of the monthly statement.
Bank statements should show that you have enough money for the entire duration of your stay + ONE COPY

9 — PROOF OF MEDICAL COVERAGE ABROAD

- A confirmation/certificate of coverage of your travel insurance (minimum coverage $50,000) without any deductible during your whole stay in France (must indicate "valid outside of the USA or "valid worldwide" and indicate starting date and ending date)

10 — PROOF OF ACCOMMODATION IN FRANCE

- if you are the owner of the property: title deeds, recent "taxes foncières"
- if you are renting the property: official lease/rental contract signed by both parties
- if you are hosted:
— if the host is the owner of the property: 1) original invitation letter indicating exact dates of stay 2) recent "taxes foncières" 3) recent utility bill with name and address 4) copy of host’s valid French ID or residency permit
— if the host is renting the property: 1) original invitation letter indicating exact dates of stay 2) official lease/rental contract signed by both parties 3) recent utility bill with name and address 4) copy of host’s valid French ID or residency permit
— if you are the owner of a private sail boat: original "US Certificate of Documentation" issued by the Department of Homeland Security US Coast Guard National Vessel Documentation Center showing your full name. Please be aware that your vessel registration must be valid for your entire stay in the overseas French territories.

11 — FOR ACCOMPANYING SPOUSE

in addition to all the documents listed above, please provide:
- Marriage license (+ ONE COPY)

12 — FOR ALL ACCOMPANYING CHILDREN

in addition to all the documents listed above, please provide:
- Birth certificate (+ ONE COPY)

**IF THE MINOR IS TRAVELLING WITH ONLY ONE PARENT:

  • notarized parental authorization from the biological parent not travelling with the child, allowing the child to travel to French overseas territories and authorizing to travel with the other parent (+ ONE COPY)
  • or official and original court document from divorce decree stating that the parent has full custody of the child(ren). (+ ONE COPY)

13 — A SELF-ADDRESSED FEDEX AIRBILL AND ENVELOPE

  • In order to mail back your passport, please provide a self-addressed FedEx Express "US Airbill" or an online prepaid FedEx Airbill
  • and FedEx envelope (one envelope per family - up to 6 passports)
  • You must be physically in the United States during the entire visa process
  • for US Airbill, please fill out your own address twice (you are the sender AND the recipient):

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • The consular administration has full authority to evaluate and request more documents than those submitted by the applicant.
  • Please be aware that submitting the aforementioned documents does not guarantee the approval of the visa.
  • The French Consulate in Los Angeles can refuse the issuance of a visa.

MAKE AN APPOINTMENT

Every applicant must apply in person and must make an appointment on our website. No exceptions. Fingerprints and a photograph must be taken in our premises in Los Angeles.

  • Children under the age of 6 are not required to be present if applying for a LONG STAY visa, however an appointment has to be booked under their name.

- If you are not able to attend, please free a slot by canceling or rescheduling your appointment by logging back in the appointment system and click on “changing your appointment”.
You will need your “LAX” confirmation number and passport number.

- One appointment = one person (for instance, family of four must take four appointments)

  • Due to the high number of applicants, the French Consulate reserves the right to cancel appointments made by the same person on the same day (or even on two different dates).
