Long stay visa for spouse of other European passport holders




This kind of visa does NOT apply to family members of French passport holders. If you are married to a French citizen, please refer to chapter "Long stay visa for spouse of French national (France and French Overseas Departments)".

For example: you are the legal spouse of a citizen of the other European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland — which does NOT include France (such as United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, etc.)




Do I need a visa to live in France for over 90 days?


- YES, if you are a citizen of the following countries even if you hold a US Permanent Resident Card ("Green Card") :


Refugee travel documents and US Re-entry permits are not accepted.
Diplomatic and special passports are not accepted

- NO, YOU DO NOT NEED A VISA, if you are a citizen of the United States of America, Canada, Mexico, or countries not listed just above.

  • However, you will have to apply for the residence permit ("carte de séjour pour membre de famille d’un ressortissant européen") within 2 months of entry into France, at the Préfecture of city of residence.

Note that it is always advisable to contact the Préfecture BEFORE leaving the U.S., in order to get a complete list of documents to provide to apply for such permit.

- B1-B2 visa holders: Please, apply in the country of your residence. No visas will be delivered to foreigners holding U.S B1-B2 visas.

Processing time

- About 1 month

Applications cannot be processed more than 3 months ahead of time.
Please, apply in advance. Do not wait for the last minute.

Requirements

Please provide us with the ORIGINAL + 1 COPY of each document including passeport and relevant pages.

You must bring your documents and the required copies otherwise your visa will automatically be denied


We only accept residents from Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Southern California and Southern Nevada. Please note you will have to show us a driver license from one of these states (for students : driver license or student ID from school located in one of these states).

- Original passport (+ ONE COPY of the identity pages)

  • Must be valid for at least six months after your return to the US
  • Has least two blank pages left to affix the visa (amendment pages are not suitable for visas).
  • Has been delivered less than 10 years ago (first issuance)
  • Be in good condition.

- One application form filled out completely and signed by the applicant.

- One ID picture. Do not glu or staple. All photographs must be recent, in color on a plain white background, of full front view, taken facing the camera. No side or angled view are acceptable. Passport size. No hat, no veil.

- A valid U.S. permanent residence card ("green card") or a valid U.S. visa with valid I-94 or valid I-20, or an Advance Parole document.

  • B1-B2 visa holders: Please, apply in the country of your residence. No visas will be delivered to foreigners holding U.S B1-B2 visas.

-  Proof of medical coverage abroad : a letter from your insurance company stating that you are covered abroad or a travel insurance to be purchased from a travel agency (minimum amount of 50,000 US$).
The letter must stipulate that the coverage is valid outside the U.S, worldwide or overseas ("out of area" is not acceptable).

- Proof of marriage : marriage certificate (+ ONE COPY)

- Your spouse’s passport

- All applicants must apply in person and must make an appointment prior to 3pm PST. Personal appearance is mandatory.

Please note that if you need your visa to be sent back to you, you must provide a self-addressed FEDEX enveloppe on the day of your appointment.

If you are not able to attend, please free a slot by canceling or rescheduling your appointment.

- One appointment = one person (for instance, family of four must take four appointments)
- One appointment per person only: due to the high number of applicants, the French Consulate reserves the right to cancel appointments made by the same person on the same day (or even on two different dates). The French Consulate will maintain the date that is the closest and cancel the farthest date (for example, if you made two appointments, one on Monday and one on Wednesday, we will keep the Monday appointment and cancel the Wednesday appointment).
